2011年5月5日より、本文の最下段のところに、挨拶表現や喜怒哀楽を表すフレーズなどを分類してみましたので、これも活用してください。これからここのセクションも充実させていきます♪(^_-)-☆

No. 275 “It’s not open for discussion.”

No. 272 で “This conversation is over.” って
いうのをやりましたが、その辺の雰囲気にちょっと
似ているのが、本日のフレーズである、
“It’s not open for discussion.” です。

これは、
「議論する余地はない」という意味で、一番
使われる場面としては、ルールを曲げることは
できない、というよう場面で使われます。

例えば、男性はネクタイとジャケット着用、
女性は、スーツかドレス、などという
ドレスコードがあるプライベートクラブ
などで「なんでジーンズでは入れないんだ?」
と文句を言っている人に対しては、
“It’s not open for discussion.” です。

もっとも、この表現もややキツめの表現ですから、
お客様を相手にするような商売や場面で、
使うことはまずありません。上の例も、
クラブ側から、お客さんに言う言葉というよりも、
友達と話して「あそこはドレスコードがあるから、
ジーンズでは入れないよ、それが規則なんだ」
みたいな会話の流れで使うことになります。

他によくある場面としては、
学校での教師と生徒との会話、家庭での親と
子の会話、なんかでは使われることがあるかも
しれません。特に、躾の厳しい環境で、
“It’s not open for discussion.” が使われます。

“Why do I have to study?”
「なんで勉強しないといけないの?」
“Because you have to. It’s not open for disucussion.”
「しないといけないから。つべこべ言わないの」
という感じです。

会社の中でも、上司と部下の関係の中で、
“Could you finish this by noon tomorrow?”
「これを明日の昼までに終わらせて」
“Can I possibly make it by evening, sir?”
「明日の夕方でもよろしいでしょうか?」
“It’s not open for discussion. By noon tomorrow.”
「議論の余地ナシ、明日の昼でお願い」
という流れになります。

あるいは、友達と何かの課題について話しているときに、
“Do you think this is open for discussion?”
「これって、話せばなんとかなるのかな?」
みたいな感覚で使うこともできます。

ま、本日のフレーズも日常バンバン使うようなもの
ではありませんが、へぇ~、こういう言い方を
するんだ~、くらいの感覚で知っておくと、
日常会話をフレーズでこなしていく、という感覚も
だんだん身についてくるものです。ま、会話の学習は
ルールがあるわけではありませんので、気軽に気軽に♪

Je reprenais tout à l’origine mathématique, mathématique devenant négligeable de
